Head writer Josh Griffith reveals Matt Clark’s intentions on The Young and the Restless. Sharon and Nick will have to confront his Machiavellian schemes, a mix of suspense, family revenge, and unexpected twists.
Matt Clark returns: suspense and revenge for Sharon and Nick
Matt Clark’s return to The Young and the Restless promises to be darker and more complex than ever. According to Josh Griffith, the show’s head writer, the goal was to create a suspenseful storyline centered on Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow).
“A large part of the audience will always continue to see them as linked, because of their history,” explains Griffith, recalling the importance of historical continuity in the plot.
A New Identity and a New Setting
First and foremost, Josh Griffith wanted to write a suspenseful story for Nick and Sharon, preferably set outside of Genoa City. While researching the characters’ pasts, he realized that Matt Clark was the perfect villain for this storyline, but unfortunately, he was dead. Griffith imagined that Nick’s enemy had rebuilt his life far from Genoa City, under a new identity.
Matt Clark, played by Roger Howarth, returns as Mitch Bacall, in the Los Angeles rock scene. Josh Griffith wanted to move away from the usual Genoa City settings and draw inspiration from a “L.A. noir” style.

“I thought, ‘What if Matt came back to life and created a new persona? He lives in L.A. and moves in the world of rock’n’roll. What if Noah was the one he connects with, because Noah lives in London with his club?’” explains the screenwriter.
By sheer luck, the filming studios are located in Los Angeles, so we can hope for some outdoor scenes.
To add a touch of romantic and mysterious tension, Matt/Mitch has a wife, Sienna (Tamara Braun). A car accident involving Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) triggers Matt’s revenge and sets the main plot in motion.
A revenge that extends to the entire Newman family.
Matt’s revenge is no longer limited to Sharon and Nick: he believes Noah took someone he loved, and he wants everyone to pay for his betrayal. He didn’t expect Noah to survive the accident.
“Everyone has to suffer. He was betrayed and wants total revenge,” Griffith explains.
However, Noah’s resilience and Sharon’s strength disrupt his plans.
“Sharon has been through hell these past few years, and it’s made him stronger than ever. He wasn’t ready for this,” says the screenwriter.
Imminent confrontation: Nick vs. Matt
The main tension remains Nick versus Matt Clark, but Sharon plays a key role in the confrontation. Griffith announces:
“Anyone who thinks Sharon isn’t going to stand up to that son of a bitch… Matt, watch this week.”
Sharon feels more rage than fear when it comes to Matt. She’s furious that he attacked her son.
Even after their confrontation in Los Angeles, Matt continues to pose a threat to the entire Newman family, and his return to Genoa City only adds to the suspense.
A story arc blending nostalgia and modern intrigue
With this return, The Young and the Restless demonstrates that classic villains are essential for reigniting tension. Griffith successfully combines nostalgia, suspense, and current plot twists, offering fans a mix of surprises and family drama for the coming weeks.
